Growing up, I was never the girl with glowing clear skin. I was very acne prone, and I felt like I tried every cream, topical ointment, and cleanser under the sun in order to correct my issue. Unfortunately, looking back, I believe a good portion of why I always broke out was due to my diet, which was very starchy, my constant picking, and not cleansing my face properly. I used harsh cleansers and scrubs in order to get rid of what I considered the excess oil. I also liked using cleansing pads instead of a simple face wash, because I was too lazy to actually wash my face.
I made my own apple cider vinegar toner many years ago, and once I started I never looked back. It's so easy to make and use, and really just made a huge difference in my complexion!
The whole point of toner is to remove the excess dirt and grime from your skin after cleansing. It also restores pH balance. Our skin is naturally acidic, and because soap is naturally alkaline, you can see why washing too often or using a harsh soap, can be so damaging to our skin.
In order to make the apple cider vinegar toner, you simply use 1 part distilled water, and 1 part organic apple cider vinegar. (Apples are at the top of the dirty dozen list, so I always make a point to purchase organic.) I will typically make a whole cup, so 1/2 cup water, and 1/2 apple cider vinegar, and then I will keep it in the refrigerator, though you don't have to. I consider myself to have sensitive skin, but it responds well to the vinegar, and can use 100% vinegar in a pinch. However, you might want to try 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water if you're afraid that this will be too much for your skin. Simply put a little of the toner on a cotton ball or pad, swipe over your face, and then continue with your essence, serums, and moisturizers as usual. If you're worried about the odor, don't worry, it goes away after a few minutes. :)
What sets apple cider vinegar apart from other types of vinegar, is that apple cider vinegar is made up of living bacteria, which is not just good for your skin, but your overall health as well. If you want to go a step further, you can always take the apple cider vinegar orally, which also helps with clearer skin because it restores your body's pH from the inside out. Sometimes I'll add a splash to my hot lemon water in the mornings, or I'll just add a little bit to my water. I'm always sure to brush my teeth afterwards though! I've heard people use apple cider vinegar on their teeth to whiten them, but I'm so afraid that acid will eat away my teeth!
