Chakras

In researching the background and history of yoga, it seemed quite natural that the next thing to explore was chakras.  There are many websites out there explaining what chakras are, but to put it in simple terms chakras are essentially are points of energy within the body.  These centers affect our thoughts, and our thoughts or perceptions of experiences in our life affect how our bodies operate, whether it be a specific organ function, our immune system and/or our emotions.

The word chakra in Sanskrit literally means wheel.  You can picture a chakra like a spinning wheel or vortex of energy, each with its own vibrations and color.  These chakras can either be blocked or overactive, both causing issues within our minds and bodies.  The key, as with everything, is to find balance within our chakras.

The seven major Chakras include:

Root Chakra
Color: Red
Element: Earth
Location: Base of the spine
Functions: Safety and grounding

Sacral Chakra
Color: Orange
Element: Water
Location: Lower belly (about 3 inches below the navel).  It’s often associated with the male and female sexual organs.
Functions: Emotions, sensuality and creativity

Solar Plexus Chakra
Color: Yellow
Element: Fire
Location: Upper abdomen (where are solar plexus are located)
Functions: Self-worth, personal will, power and mental abilities

Heart Chakra
Color: Green
Element: Air
Location: At the heart (center of the chakra system)
Functions: Love, compassion and relating to others

Throat Chakra
Color: Light Blue or Turquoise
Element: Sound
Location: At the throat
Functions: Expression and communication

Third Eye Chakra
Color: Dark Blue or Purple
Element: Supreme element – a combination of all elements in their true form.
Location: Between the eyebrows above the bridge of the nose
Functions: Intuition, foresight and openness

Crown Chakra
Color: Deep Purple or White
Element: Thought
Location: At the top of the head
Functions: Consciousness

There are so many good websites out there, but I found this one to be really helpful.

Happy April Fools' Day!

I'm not a very creative person, and have never come up with something truly funny to do to my friends, family, or any roommates I've had over the years.  Maybe one day I'll be able to put some of the ideas below to good use.  Until then... these are just amusing.

There is No Gain Without Struggle

We all struggle with something.  In our moments of struggle, it's impossible to think that other people could possibly be feeling the same hurt, frustration, and loneliness we are.  Remember you are not alone.  Struggling is a part of being human.  Without it, we would not appreciate the good things that we have.  Today, recognize that without struggle, we are not driven to be better.  You are better today, than you were yesterday.  Just keep going!  Keep taking steps every day to work towards your goals of personal development.

Embrace Being Uncomfortable

We’ve all heard it before, “ Life isn’t always comfortable.”   Even if the change is a positive one, like eating healthier… it’s still not comfortable.     I’m in the process of buying my first home, and while I’m so happy and excited, I’m also really nervous and scared.   I would like to think I’m ready for the additional challenges and responsibilities of owning my own home.   But, what if I’m not?   Big life changes can be really nerve-racking!   But, I’m finding familiarity with being uncomfortable.   And, I actually take that to be a good thing.     If we get too comfortable, there is no growth, and if there is no growth, then we are just slowly dying. So, this week, embrace being a little uncomfortable.   It’s how you know you’re changing!
